Classic Car parts Classic El Camino History 1968 - 1972Classic Car Parts Co.Third generation (1968-1972) 1968 will see a longer Classic El Camino body based on the station wagon or four door wheelbase. It will see the introduction of the Super Sport, the SS would only be available in with the 396 ci engine. ![]() 1968 El Camino 1969 will see no changes for the El Camino it will follow the Chevelle body style. 1970 will see the biggest and most radical change for the Classic El Camino. The basic Super Sport would be the 402 but the emblems will be the familiar 396. With a base engine of 325 hp up to 375 hp. A limited edition 454 will be introduced with the LS6 454 with 450 hp. This will give the El Camino faster times at the drag strip around the mid to high 13’s at around 105 mph. For the first part of the model year most 454 SS will come only with a manual 4 speed and a bench seat, later limited edition El Camino Super Sports would be available with Bucket Seats, Console, and either a Turbo 400 Transmission or a manual 4 speed. 1971 will see GM’s philosophy change, as with the Chevelle the El Camino will be hit by the power reductions caused by new emission laws and a lower octane fuel. The dual head lights will give way to the single head light and the Monte Carlo style grille. GM will introduce a re-badge El Camino called the Sprint. 1972 will see even lower power ratings and sales will follow the power. The muscle car era is now officially dead.
