The 1970 El Camino SS was the cream of the crop

The 1970 Classic El Camino SS will be the most powerful El Camino that Chevrolet will produce. With the lifting of GM's ban on engines larger than 400 cid in midsize cars, Chevrolet answered by using a new 454 cubic engine in its El Camino SS.

The LS5 454 with a new design had 360bhp. The LS6 version with 450bhp will the be largest engine choice. The LS6 had a 800-cfm Holley four barrel on an aluminum manifold, 11.25:1 compression, solid lifters, four-bolt mains, forged steel crank and connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, and deep-groove accessory pulleys. No production engine has had a lager factory horsepower rating, and will be a one year production run. Unfortunately this performance gain would cost the El Camino a luxury, of no air conditioning.

A standard Classic El Camino SS 396 (402 cid) came with a 350bhp and the 325bhp, it will be dropped for 1971.

One of the new options will be the vacuum operated Cowl Induction hood, which had a rear facing door near the base of the windshield to feed cold air into the carburetor. Sporting a new front end, hood pins, and five spoke Rally wheels the El Camino was at its height in style and performance.

Total production: 53,599

L34 402 V8 350bhp@5200rpm, 415lb-ft@3400.
